Chapter Eleven

The Fugitive

It hadn’t really occurred to James that he probably wouldn’t be able to outrun a couple of German Shepherds even with a thirty or forty yard head start, but as soon as he’d started he knew he was committed. He turned to his right and dashed around the corner of the arcade room, back into the Great Hall. A few quick steps, right again, and then up the stairs that were a mirror image of the ones so famously featured in the movie “The Untouchables”.

That’s just what I need, a reason for Hollywood to make a movie about me getting shot more full of holes that Swiss cheese in another gangster movie.

Except in this scene you won’t be shooting back.

And they’d probably make one of the stupid dogs the hero.

Which reminded James that the dogs were probably right on his heels. He could hear the hounds’ claws clattering on the marble floor, their chains jingling. One let out a vicious bark as it ran and James could almost envision his guts being torn out as he bounded up the stairs. He wasn’t a sprinter and the dogs had more than a slight advantage on him.

Get to the door. Don’t look back, just get to the door.

The German Shepherds gained on him faster than he would have thought possible, and James didn’t have to look over his shoulder to know that they’d cut the space between them in half in only a few leaps.

I’m not going to make it, James thought with bitter despair, letting his fear push him harder for the doors.

James crested the top of the steps just as the clacking of one of the dogs’ nails ceased and it let out a snarl. It left James with the mental image of the beast leaping towards him, fangs bared and ready to clamp down before it dragged him to the ground.

With more forethought than he expected to have in the situation, he ducked and juked left as he guessed when the dog would hit him. To James’ surprise, the huge beast sailed past him, hitting his shoulder and arm as it did, its weight and force momentarily throwing James off balance. The dog managed to twist in the air and land on its feet with the uncanny grace common to large predators. It slid smoothly on the marble floor before slamming into the brass doors, even as it clawed at the glossy surface for traction to make another leap at James. Its muzzle was still on and James had to breath a sigh of relief for that at least. James caught a glimpse of the dog as it snarled again. The only way he could describe the sound was as frustration. It pushed off the door, flinging itself at James, but he had already burst through the other door, not wasting time to look back.

James heard a loud bang and guessed that the other hound had just run full into the door in an attempt to catch him before he got away.
